Parts of Kaduna South are experiencing power outages following the collapse of a transmission tower in Rigasa community, Kaduna State.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that tower No. 7 along the Kaduna Town Line I and II collapsed on Thursday after a heavy downpour and windstorm.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the company said initial investigations revealed that vandals had carted away some of the tower’s structural components, leaving it vulnerable to collapse.
“The incident primarily affected supply to some Kaduna Electric distribution load centres feeding parts of Kaduna South. However, areas such as Kinkinau, Yan Tukwane, Kabala West, Unguwan Muazu and Kaduna North are unaffected,” the statement read.
To cushion the impact, TCN advised Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) to link its 33kV Mogadishu feeder with the 33kV Abakwa feeder, allowing customers in the Mogadishu axis to have temporary access to supply.
TCN added that its engineers have begun dismantling the collapsed tower to clear the site and prepare for the erection of a replacement.
“We apologize for the inconvenience the incident has caused the affected customers in Southern Kaduna, and we sincerely appreciate their patience and understanding as we continue to work round the clock to build a new tower,” the company said.
The company assured residents that efforts are being made to reduce the duration of the outage.
