Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Gov. Ayade Hails Ex-Servicemen for sacrifices

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River, on Friday, lauded ex-servicemen for their services to the nation, saying that they risked their lives to keep Nigeria united.

Speaking at the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day parade in Calabar, Ayade, however, expressed worries over what he called “the pitiable condition of the ex-servicemen’’.
The governor, who donated a bus to the state chapter of the Nigerian Legion, said it was government responsibility to take care and protect the ex-servicemen.

“You fought for the sustenance of the oneness of this nation. You fought to keep us alive. Therefore, we have the duty and responsibility to protect you and take care of you. Of course, one good turn deserves another.

“I understand your challenges; I understand your situation. I, therefore, hereby authorise the purchase of a brand new bus for all of you, the ex- servicemen,’’ he said.
The Chairman of state chapter of the Nigerian Legion, Capt. Joseph Offiong (retd.), described this year’s 2021 Remembrance Day as unique.

Offiong commended Ayade for donating bus to the legion and promised to use it judiciously.
Earlier, the governor had led service commanders in the state and widows of fallen soldiers to lay wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldiers at the Millennium Park, Calabar. (NAN)
