Banks defy CBN directives, still charge N65 on ATM withdrawals

In what appears as defiance to directives issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, commercial banks are still charging the N65 ATM withdrawal fees which was slashed to N35.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had in a document, ‘Guide to Bank Charges’ released by the apex bank, on Sunday reduced the charges to N35.

The document also directed banks to charge customers N10 for electronic transfers below N5,000, and N25 for electronic transfers between N5,000 and N50,000. Only electronic transfers above N50,000 will attract N50 charge.

The CBN directives also removed card maintenance fee on all cards linked to current accounts and asked banks to charge a maximum of N1 per mille for customer-induced debit transactions to third parties and transfers or lodgments to the customers’ account in other banks on current accounts only.

WikkiTimes reliable gathered that the directives of the CBN was yet to be enforced as many customers are still being charge the bogus N65 on ATM withdrawals from other banks.

Hassan Adamu a resident of Bauchi metropolis who cashed in at banks ATMs other than his primary bank told WikkiTimes that he was still being charge the N65.

“They are lying, I withdrew money just this morning from another ATM, they are still charging the N65.”

Umar Mohammed who resides at railway quarters in Bauchi metropolis also echoed Adama; ”These people (banks) are thieves, they are not suppose to charge money abinitio and even after the directives, they are still charging us money.

WikkiTimes can authoritatively reports that the defiance on the CBN directives is not peculiar to Bauchi state alone.

In a telephone conversation with residents from neighboring Gombe state, the medium gathered that bank customers in the city are also being charge the said N65 despite the apex bank’s directives.

But a bank manager who pledges anonymity told this medium that the enforcement of the CBN directives may not be immediate as many internal “modifications must be put in place before reversing to N35”.
