Bauchi District Head Blames BASEPA, Households for Cholera Outbreak

Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba, District Head of Bauchi has fingered poor and untimely evacuation of refuse dumps by the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) and households as major contributing factor responsible for incessant cholera outbreaks within Bauchi metropolis.

Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba stated this on Wednesday when he signed Water Aid Commitment Card and becomes Cholera Champion and personal hygiene and environmental sanitation.

Alhaji Nuru Adamu said “BASEPA delay evacuation of refuse and  this attitude was always responsible for frequent flooding experienced in the state capital, with the attendant risk of contaminating available water source.”

The District Head however, pledged to use his position as a cholera champion to seek synergy with Bauchi local government council and BASEPA to help eradicate cholera just as polio disease was terminated.

Mr Magaji Barde, spokesman of WaterAid and it’s Bauchi state partner, Women Development Association For Self Sustenance (WODASS), implored the crowned cholera champion to mobilise communities to appreciate the importance of cleanliness to the socio-economic well-being of the people.

Mr Magaji Barde  expressed  furry over indiscriminate dumping of refuse on waterways, enjoined the cholera champion to educate residents of the state to observe sanitary rules of environmental cleanliness to stem the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

 Alhaji Nuru Adamu Kobi, Director, National Orientation Agency, admonished elective office holders to priority provision of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to donation of cash and motor cycles to their constituents.

He said politicians have role to play to checkmate  recurrent cholera outbreak in identified hot spots in Buachi state by ensuring that residents communities have access to save drinking water to avert outbreak of waterborne diseases.

When contacted to commend on the allegations, Special Adviser on Media to the Agency’s Director General, Isyaka Laminu Badamasi promised to gets back to our reporter.

He has yet to respond as at press time.
