Bauchi state government has succumbed to intense pressure and criticisms and has resolved to pay some of its retirees.
The state government says arrangements to commence the payment of the outstanding gratuities of the local government pensioners from 29th of this month have been concluded.
A statement by the secretary of the ‘high powered committee’ constituted by the state Governor for the payment, Alhaji Isiaka Tijjaji Bello said the payment is for the retirees within the years of 2010 to 2012 who are to benefit from one million to N 1.2 million.
According to the statement, retirees who are alive from 2010 to 2011 will also benefit from the payment.
The beneficiaries were requested to visit their local government secretariats with the required documents for identification.
The state Governor has been under intense pressure especially from opposition politicians to pay the retirees their emoluments. The Governor is rated low by many commentators for low performance since he assumes office in 2015.
Most of the roads contracts awarded in the state remain uncompleted, its schools are still in shambles with over 1.2 million out of school children still roaming the streets.
