Borno Govt Revokes N6.7bn Roads Contract

The Borno Government has revoked a N6.7 billion township road projects awarded to Messrs Hajaig Construction Nig. Limited.

Briefing newsmen on the development in Maiduguri on Thursday, the state Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Yerima Saleh, said the decision to revoke the contract was taken during an Executive Council meeting presided by Gov. Babagana Zulum.

Saleh said that the 20km road contract was awarded in 2012, but the contractor only did seven kilometres.

“We have exhausted all clauses in the agreement on the Bulumkutu road and drainages, and Ramat Polytechnic junction to Wulari roads.

“Government has done all at its best after paying huge amount to the contractor but unfortunately the progress is nothing to write home about,” Saleh lamented.

He explained that the work from Ramat Polytechnic junction to Wulari ward was now to be done by direct labour at the cost of N230 million, while the contractor was to make a refund of N659.3 million.

“This is a signal from government to all contractors that non-performance will no longer be tolerated,” Saleh warned. (NAN)
