Breaking: After Public Rebuke by Kano Gov, Hisbah Boss Resigns

Barely 24 hours after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has publicly rebuked Hisbah’s ‘operation kau da badala’ in the state, the Commandant-general of Hisbah board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, has resigned his position Friday morning.

The recent raids by Hisbah in Kano recently to check immoral activities in the state tagged “operation Kau da Badala” which implies efforts to eliminate immoral activities in public places in the state is aimed at fighting immorality and enforcing sanity in accordance with Islamic values.

However, governor Yusuf while speaking at a meeting with Imams at Kano State Government House on Thursday said the modus operandi of the board needs to be reviewed.

“I saw a video that disrupted my peace. You parked cars and went to where males and females were doing unholy things. They were picked up and beaten with bamboo sticks while they took to their heels. They were being packed up inside the vehicle like animals. This is a big mistake for you to hold an adult and throw him like a goat into a Hilux.

“Hisbah is a board that we take in high esteem and brought in God fearing people that we know can deliver in line with what is right” the governor said.

However, shortly after the governor’s open criticism, many people including the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state condemned the governor for publicly discrediting the Hisbah. They argued that as the one who appointed hisbah, he can correct their mistakes through official channels.
Recall that there was controversy over how a popular Tiktoker, Murja Kunya, staunch supporter of Gov. Yusuf, was released from prison after a shariah court ordered her detention when she was charged to court by the Hisbah.

Sheikh Daurawa, who was in Kaduna currently posted a video of 2 minutes 53 seconds on his Facebook page, saying he heard news emanating from Kano which were discouraging him from carrying out his activities of correcting societal ills through Islamic values.

“I have done my best to engage with film makers and Tik Tokers on how to best go about their activities in line with our religious and cultural values. I even invited Murja and others. We sat down and discussed with them on how they can be better people.”

“Those that refused to heed to our advice, we have to take the necessary action. But I understand that His excellency, the executive governor isn’t happy with what we are doing. I ask for his forgiveness. I resign from this position he has given me to head Hisbah. I wish him all the I best I pray to God to guide him through and aid his government,” he said.

Sheikh Daurawa was reappointed as the Hisbah boss by Governor Yusuf shortly after his election in the 2023 governorship election.
