A few days to Christmas celebration, many parents in Enugu, capital of Enugu state have decried high cost of children’s wears in the area, News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Many parents who spoke to NAN in separate interviews, lamented over the development and expressed frustration over their inability to buy new wears for their children.
Mr Sunday Emmanuel, a civil servant at Garki Market, said that dealers of children’s wears were taking advantage of the season to increase the prices of children’s items.
Emmanuel said that since Nigeria had been out of economic recession, things ought not be very expensive any more.
“The country has come out of recession, yet things are very expensive. i believe that traders in our various markets are taking undue advantage of the yuletide to exploit costumers,” he said.
Mrs Monica Egbuna, a buyer at Ogbete Main Market, said she resorted to buy second hand clothes for her children, for Christmas, as she could not afford the high price of new wears.
Egbuna said that it was wise to use N12, 000 to get about three good quality baby gowns ( second hand) for her children rather than buying only one new gown with such amount of money.
Mrs Ebere Onyekwere, another buyer who noted that high cost of children wears remained a recurrent decimal in the area, called on sellers to have a change of heart.
“This high cost of children’s wears happens every end of year, because the sellers will want to make much gain which they could not make during other months.
“I usually buy my children’s wears as early as September, in order to avoid the frustration that buyers face during the yuletide,” she said.
However, Mrs Evelyn Ukeji, a dealer in chidren’s wears said that the high cost of children’s wears was as a result of the high exchange rate, adding that most of the children’s wears were foreign goods.
“The exchange rate has increased, so customers should not expect the prices to remain static, because almost everything has increased in price,” she said.
According to Ukeji, the prices depend on the make, quality and countries where the wears were bought from.
According to her, American wears stands between N14, 000 and N18, 500 while the ones from other foreign countries go for between N8, 000 and N12, 000.
