Hamisu Mu’azu, Bauchi State Commissioner for Environment and Housing said the state governor, Bala Mohammed has released the sum of 28 million for the ministry to create 6 waste collection centers and reactivate existing ones in Bauchi metropolis.
The commissioner who cited distressing media reports documenting the magnitude of indiscriminate waste disposal in state also requested corporate bodies working in Bauchi to support the administration in planting trees at different locations in the metropolis.
WikkiTimes’ investigation in September had documented how Muda Lawal, the largest vegetables market in Bauchi was ‘left to bear the brunt of the evolving putrid and frowsty waste that is increasingly growing into a nightmare of some sort.’
The report highlighted how some strategic locations that houses traders selling tomatoes, onions, oranges and other perishable goods were littered with fetid garbage.
Many shop owners at the time blame union leaders and the government for ignoring sanitation even as the shop owners pay huge amount in tax.
The commissioner also said the State government will host the first north east climate change conference that will house critical stakeholders as participants in an effort to combat the effect of climate change.
“For the first time in the history of the north east, Bauchi State will host commissioners of environment from the zone to converge in Bauchi to discuss problems of waste and other environmental challenges in the region.
“The good thing about this conference is that our Ministry will host it without writing any memo to his Excellency requesting for his support.”
Shira said the conference will draw the attention of the international community on priority areas that require urgent intervention.
