Human Trafficking: Jigawa Police Crackdown on Syndicates, Rescue 60 Victims

The Police in Jigawa State have arrested two persons for alleged trafficking of people and forcing them into hard labour.

The police said the suspects were among the syndicates that specialized in trafficking young men into the southern part of the country in the disguise of making money.

Lawan Shi’isu Adam, Jigawa State Police Command’s spokesperson in a statement on Friday said the suspects were arrested following a tip-off received from the District Head of Marken Biki after they mobilized about sixty persons ready to Osun State.

According to him, a team of police detectives from Babura Division led by the DPO arrived at the village where two suspects were arrested in connection with the act.

“On 02/11/2023 at about 1230hrs, information was received at Babura Police Station from Marken Biki District Head, that miscreants had stormed into Garin Baki village Babura LGA, recruited about sixty (60) people intending to carry them to Osun State for unskilled labour”.

“Immediately after receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer led a team of policemen and swiftly moved to the village where one Omotosho Daniel ‘m’ age 40yrs of Ife South LGA Osun State, and one Tanimu Usman ‘m’ age 20yrs of Kwadage village Roni LGA Jigawa State were arrested”, he said.

Adam added that during the investigation, the suspects confessed that they were recruiting people to Osun State, for Farm Harvesting, without authorization from relevant stakeholders.

The spokesman added that the suspects would be charged to court when the investigation was completed.
