Kano Gov’t To Boost Crop Residues Utilisation Through Donor Project –official

The Islamic Development Bank-supported Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), plans to purchase machines for effective utilisation of crop residues in the state.

The Project Coordinator, Malam Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, made the disclosure in a statement issued by the project’s Communication Specialist, Mr Ameen Yassar, on Thursday in Kano.

Speaking at a bid opening event for the procurement of machines and materials for crop residues utilisation, Garba-Muhammad said that the project would engage youths in the process, in order to improve their livelihood. “

Engaging youths in crop residues utilisation will not only create jobs for them, but also address the problem of animal feeds inadequacy and migration, among herdsmen,” he said.

Crop residues are mostly produced in the state from wheat, rice, maize, millet, sorghum, cowpea husks and legumes, among others, but oftentimes they were left on the farms to rot, used for cooking or burnt to make manure.

Garba-Muhammad, who noted that over 4 million metric tons of grains were produced in the state, on the average annually, added that the initiative to effectively utilise the residues would also assist in safeguarding the environment. (NAN)
