NITDA Alert Nigerians on QR Code Frauds

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has raised awareness about internet fraud activities using QR codes.

While convenient for quick access to information, QR codes are becoming a target for scammers. Unsuspecting users can fall victim to various schemes by simply scanning a malicious code.

According to the agency in a post on X, “Fraudsters are exploiting the speed and ease of QR codes to trick people. These scams can take many forms, and the consequences can vary depending on the attacker’s goals.”

Speaking further on the trick, NITDA explained that the scam could take various forms including phishing, payment fraud, data theft or identity theft.

NITDA urged Nigerians to exercise caution when encountering QR codes, especially those in unexpected places.

“Users should be wary of scanning QR codes, from unfamiliar sources or unsolicited messages.

“Verify the legitimacy of QR codes and associated links before scanning them. Use reputable QR code scanning apps with built-in security features. Regularly update devices with the latest antivirus software and security patches.” It wrote.
