Plateau Locals Hold Meetings Elsewhere as Town Hall Construction Project Hangs

Residents of Kumbuna town in Jos South local council, Plateau State, say they now hold their meetings elsewhere as the ongoing construction of a town hall in the community had been stalled for over five months ago.

Rifkatu Jang, a resident of the community recalled how locals were excited when the project was awarded.

“I can still recall how we as a community were happy when the project started, but then the project stopped in October — over six months ago,” she told UDEME, a platform designed to hold government accountable. “Whenever the women need to hold their meeting, we either use the community leader’s house, open space, or the church premises, which are mostly not convenient.”

Her words were corroborated by the community leader,  Peter Dung, who extolled the government for erecting the hall for members of his community.

“We are happy this project was brought to our community, though we face challenges when it comes to holding community meetings,” he said.

“If we are to have our meeting as a community, we either have it outside the school premises or the kings’ palace but when it’s the rainy season we have to go to Maraban Jama’a, our neighbouring community to have our meeting because they have a functioning hall there.”
