Sultan of Sokoto Meets Northern Elders, Laments Hunger, Insecurity in Region

The spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has lamented the inability of Northern Nigerian leaders to address the challenges of insecurity, poverty, and hunger facing region.

He noted that this development is despite these leaders possessing the capacity to do so.

The Sultan said this whole addressing a gathering of Northern traditional rulers and stakeholders from the region in Kaduna.

He further stressed the threat posed by insecurity, unemployment, and poverty, particularly among Northern youth, to the nation. This is even as he acknowledged the growing nationwide frustration on these issues.

While highlighting the reasons for the gathering, the Sultan stated that there is a dire need to explore practical solutions across various sectors, including education and health, in addition to addressing poverty and insecurity.

“I have said it many times and will repeat it, things are difficult in the North and it is our duty as leaders who lead millions of people in the North to find a solution.

“And, it’s not that there is no solution, but it’s the implementation, because every time we meet like this, everyone brings good suggestions, but each of us discards the suggestions in the meeting room.”

“That is why for the first time we have invited the group of elders of the North and others to see how to solve the problems of the North and this country,” he said.

Sultan of Sokoto Chides Security Operatives Over Banditry

In his words, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, represented by his Deputy Hadiza Balarabe, highlighted security as a pivotal factor in Northern development.

Governor Sani emphasized the need for concerted efforts to combat prevalent security threats such as kidnapping and terrorism, proposing the establishment of a unified security centre as a potential solution.

Yusuf Magaji Bichi, the Director DSS, represented by the agency’s director in the state, Abdul Enenche, stressed the importance of traditional rulers in curbing security threats.

He urged cooperation among stakeholders to combat misinformation and address security challenges effectively.
