Updated: Bauchi NLC, TUC co-opted into BVN verification committee

Representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in Bauchi state have now been included as members of the verification committee recently inaugurated by the state government to authenticate the status of over 41,000 workers and pensioners said to be without Bank Verification Numbers BVN.

The two unions had last week in a live radio telephone-in programme monitored by this medium said they were neither consulted by the government nor included in the composition of the verification committee, in order to ensure justice to the affected workers-being their umbrella bodies.

However, during a press briefing in Bauchi by chairman of the verification committee Adamu Ibrahim Gumba to herald the commencement of its work, leaders of the NLC and the TUC Danjuma Saleh and Usman Muhammed graced the occassion as bonafide members.

During the live radio programme, the two leaders had unanimously said they were going to go back and consult with their members with a view to taking decision on the government’s inability to include them in the composition of the committee.

It is yet unclear who compromised between the state government and the organized labour that led to their inclusion in membership of the committee.

Speaking to newsmen on the new development, the TUC chairman Usman Muhammed said they have mebraced dialogue as means of solving the salary embroglio with the government.

Also speaking, the NLC chairman requested workers in the stte to cooperate with them as they would not allow any genuine civil servant to be cheated.

The verification committee has two weeks within which to complete its assignment.
