I Will Step Down if My Predecessor Wins – Speaker Akuyam

Babayo Akuyam, the newly elected speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, has vowed to step down if his predecessor, Abubakar Suleiman, wins the rerun.

The former speaker was removed from office after the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja nullified his re-election and ordered a rerun in ten polling units in his Ningi Central Constituency of Ningi local government.

WikkiTimes had reported that the sacked erstwhile speaker Suleiman described the ruling of the court as a minor political setback.

However, in an interview with journalists on Tuesday at the Assembly complex Babayo Akuya announced that he would step down if Suleiman returns after the rerun.

“As a gentleman, I will honourably resign. That is the promise of the entire lawmakers. We all agreed that if he is back, honourably, myself I know I will step down for him. I will honourably resign and give him a chance because I’m a gentleman and honourable, so no problem. Anytime, God willing and allow him to return after the rerun, no problem,” he said.

He added that the rerun election would allow him to further widen the margin between him and his closest opponent.

Meanwhile, his deputy, Jamilu Barade, representing Bauchi Central was also not sacked by the appellate court as it ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections in nine polling units in his constituency.
