Mahmud Abdullahi, an All Progressives Congress (APC) federal lawmaker representing Agaie/Lapai constituency in Niger State was recently saved from being stripped of his seat at the House of Representatives when the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal (NAEPT) ruled in his judgment. He’s among the committee of lawmakers indicted of taking bribes from federal agencies and institutions they were investigating for job racketeering.
A first-timer in the legislative chamber, Abdullahi was the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the former governor of Niger State, Abdulkadir Kure. He was formerly with Vanguard newspaper as a journalist.
Peoples Democratic Party‘s Sa’idu Isah, his contender in the parliamentary election, had filed a petition, challenging Abdullahi’s victory. The petitioner claimed the election was marred by unprecedented crisis and irregularities, according to Daily Post.
But Justice Angela Otaluka in her judgment, said that the petitioner had failed to substantiate his claims as contained in his petition and failed to prove the allegations of noncompliance. She, however, dismissed the petition.
Abdullahi could have not made it to the parliament. He narrowly escaped death in May last year when thugs suspected to be working for his opponent, waylaid him and his supporters in Agaie Local Government Area.
