ASUU Debunks Rumours of Strike Suspension

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has debunked the rumours that the union has reached an agreement with the federal government to call-off the nine months old strike.

This was contained in a press release circulate Journalists in Bauchi by the coordinator, ASUU Bauchi zone, professor Lawan Abubakar.

The statement said that the principal officers and trustees who constitute the core of representatives of ASUU at the negotiation meeting with the government are not constitutionally empowered to suspend any strike action.

 “Whatever, comes out of an agreement with agents of government is an offer which must be taken back to the branches through the various organs of the union. Views and perspectives on offer by government are aggregated and presented to government agents as counter offers”.

The statement said; “This made union strategy of offer and counter offer is continually deployed until the National Executive council (NEC) of ASUU consisting of all recognized Chairpersons finally approves what it considers an acceptable offer from the government. It is only then that any strike action by ASUU can be suspended.”

“ASUU recognises and appreciate the concerns of all Nigerians who have been calling for an early resolution of the ongoing strike crisis.It was a needless crisis that happened because government has consistent failed to faithfully implements the agreements it freely signed with the union” The statement read.”

The statement quoted ASUU as saying that the union is equally “worried and embarrassed that those in position of authority over the years displayed indifference to the decay in Nigerian public Universities.”
