Bauchi-Gombe Road Now Death Trap, Says Bauchi NUJ Chairman

The Chairman of the Bauchi State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Umar Sa’idu has called on the federal government to urgently look at the possibilities of reconstructing the much-awaited Bauchi-Gombe highway.

He described the highway as death trap, referencing the number of fatal crashes that have led to deaths and life changing injuries on the road.

Sa’idu, made the call on Friday while speaking at the 2022 World Bicycle Day rally held at the NUJ Press Center, Bauchi State. He lamented that the 150 kilometers-stretched road has completely become deplorable to the extent that motorists and other road users pass through untold difficulties plying it.

He further lamented that the road claim innocent lives on a daily basis because every portion of the road has deteriorated, forcing drivers to always meander to avoid potholes. In the process, Sa’idu said the drivers swerve off the road or collide with another vehicle, thereby leading to loss of lives.

According Sa’idu, commercial vehicles plying the road are the worst affected as they have to change tyres and other spare parts regularly, a situation he said was responsible for increasing transportation. Though fuel scarcity is another force driving the increase, he noted.

He therefore called on the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to immediately intervene in fixing the road. In addition, he adviced commuters to take precaution while plying the road.
