Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has declared Monday as a public holiday to commemorate the Islamic New Year 1446.
WikkiTimes reports that today marks the beginning of this year’s Islamic new year, which is based on the Lunar calendar, and is being counted after the historic migration of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madina.
The governor, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado and made available to reporters in Bauchi on Sunday, said the declaration is i recognition of the importance of the Islamic Calendar.

“This gesture underscores the administration’s respect for the religious and cultural values of our Muslim community, offering an opportunity for reflection, prayer and celebration.

“The government acknowledges the importance of Al-Muharram as a time for renewal and spiritual growth for our Muslim brothers and sisters.
“Government offices, banks and schools are hereby notified to observe this work-free day. Normal activities will resume the following day,” the statement read in parts.Â
Governor Mohammed encouraged Bauchi citizens to observe activities that would promote peace and integration on the occasion with different categories of people and beliefs.
He also urged Muslims to use the opportunity to pray for the socio-economic growth and development of Bauchi state and Nigeria as a whole.
