Cervical Cancer: Bauchi, Kano, 14 Others to Benefit from Primary Health Care HPV Vaccines

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has introduced the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as part of routine immunization in 16 states, including Bauchi and Kano States.

The gesture is part of efforts to nip in the bud the spread of cervical cancer in the country.

Executive Director of the NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, announced that starting from October 24, girls ranging from ages 9-14 years would begin to receive the HPV vaccine aimed at preventing cervical cancer.

A statement from the agency’s X-handle, popularly known as Twitter, Tuesday, identified some benefitting states, including Bauchi, Jigawa, Benue, Nasarawa, Kano and Taraba. The listed northern states would serve as a pilot phase for the vaccine distribution, which would be free.

“Starting on the 24th of October 2023, the HPV vaccine will become a part of Nigeria’s Routine Immunization Schedule”.

“The introduction will begin in 16 states during phase I, which includes Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Enugu, FCT, Jigawa. Others are Kano, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, and Taraba”, it said.

“This vaccination program is aimed at girls aged 9-14, and parents and caregivers must ensure their children receive the HPV vaccine”.

“This vaccine protects against the Human Papillomavirus, a known cause of Cervical Cancer. It’s important to note that these vaccines are free, safe, and highly effective”, the statement added.
