Chinese Denies Allegations of Supporting Terrorism in Nigeria

The Chinese government has denied allegations that it is paying bribes to terrorists wreaking havoc in many northern Nigerian states to gain access to mining sites.

China says it will never participate in anything related to supporting terrorist activities, according to BBC Hausa.

The response comes after a Times report indicted Chinese companies in Nigeria of abetting terrorism in Nigeria.

An investigation by the Lagos-based SBM Monitoring Group sent to the Times newspaper revealed some videos on social media sites such as WhatsApp of some rebels leaders beating their chests that they have the force that all Chinese workers who want to start mining in their areas, have to pay them land tax.

However, a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria described the report as “unfounded” and expressed its government’s displeasure over this report.

The allegations contained in the report were without any basis, and there is a question about the report, said the embassy.

The Chinese Embassy emphasised that over the years, the relationship between China and Nigeria has contributed to healthy development for both countries and their communities.

“Therefore, we will continue to work with the Nigerian government to ensure the development of the country and overcome the security problems,” the embassy assured. “We also welcome our international partners to join this effort but we will reject any intention or action that will harm our relations.”
