In its continued efforts to bolster the voices of women in decision making, the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), has paid an advocacy and buy -in meeting with community stakeholders in Ningi and Dass local government areas of Bauchi state.
Aisha Ibrahim Kilishi, Amirah of FOMWAN says a total of 200 women were reached in Ningi and Dass local government areas.
“The idea is to help these women have confidence in themselves and be able to actively participate on every thing that concerns their lives.
“we don’t want our women to remain perceive as has been the norm, it’s now time for women to be involved in decision making and that is why the program is tagged ‘Women’s voice and Leadership’ as part of efforts to built their confidence and give them voice” Aisha had said.
The Amirah said “a tool was designed to find out from the women and men on some social issues that happen within the community. “The tool is administered to all the women in the households visited where a team of 4 people were posted to each community to administer the template, houses were sampled.
“A total of 140 houses were visited, 222 women were interviewed through one-on-one, while the men were assembled in three different locations in each ward and interviewed as a group”, she added.
The project, funded by Global Affairs Canada through ActionAid Nigeria aims at creating sustainable women voice and leadership through active women participation in decision making, women involvement in planning, management and implementation of activities within at family and community levels.
Responding, the caretaker committee chairman of Ningi LGA Alhaji Salisu Abdu who expressed his gratitude for the selection of Ningi to partake in the project says his LGA will make necessary security arrangement to ensure fruitful implementation of the program.
At Nasaru community, the traditional leader Mas’ud Sarki to pledge to ensure that girls and women of his community give their maximum cooperation and active participation in the project which he believes has the tendencies to empower local women.
Other villages visited for the advocacy visit in Ningi and Dass include Gadar Maiwa, Tiffi Tsohuwa Ningi town, Bagel, Bajar, Dott and Lukshi where women and girls expressed optimism and willingness to participate.
