Group threatens to sue EFCC for not prosecuting former Bauchi Governor

The Coalition Against Financial Crime and Injustice has threatened to sue the Economic Financial Crimes Commission EFCC and its chairman, for their alleged inability to investigate and prosecute former Governor of Bauchi State Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar on suspicion of fraudulent acts and corrupt practices.

Chairman of the group Alhaji Dogo Bibi stated this in Bauchi while interacting with reporters, saying that the coalition had filed several petitions to the commission against various alleged corrupt practices by the former governor, which were duly received by the agency, but remained silent.

He said some of the petitions filed by the coalition included the four billion Naira the governor allegedly used without the approval of the State lawmakers, fraudulent act in fertilizer procurement, hajj operations and awarding many contracts without following due process.

“The contract were given when he has no state executive council and the former governor’s inability to provide the 500 tractors he claimed to have bought for farmers in the state and the 60 buses he claimed to have purchased for the yankari transport corporation. Up to now he didn’t deliver the tractors and the buses” claimed Dogo.

Dogo said “we don’t know why the EFCC were still silent over the issue. If they were unable to investigate him because he has immunity at that time, now that he left office he has no any immunity and for that he should be prosecuted or else we will be left with no option but to sue the commission and its chairman before the court so that Court will compel them to investigate and prosecute the former governor”.

He said the commission’s refusal to prosecute the former governor will dent President Muhammadu Buhari’s much touted anti corruption fight before Nigerians and the international community.

The coalition therefore issued a two weeks ultimatum to the EFCC to show cause why they refused to prosecute the former governor in a court of competent jurisdiction or be dragged before a court.
