Kaduna State Govt Seals Off UBA Bank for Alleged Tax Defaults

The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service has commenced began full enforcement on tax compliance with sealing off the branches of United Bank for Africa PLC(UBA) for alleged default in tax payments.

The agency which said the bank was sealed off due to non-compliance by the financial institution as it has huge established tax liability covering 2019 to 2021, coupled by lack of proper response on the four-demand service previously served the bank.

The agency said it has sealed UBA branches at Yakubu Gowon Way, Ahmadu Bello Way, Checheniya Branch and Gumi Market branch all within Kaduna metropolitan city, adding that this action is in line with powers vested in it by Section 104 of the Personal Income Tax Act.

Zakari Jamilu Muhammad, Head, Corporate Communications in a statement via the agency’s X handle, said the enforcement exercise was led by the Board Secretary/Legal Adviser Barrister Aysha Ahmad, on the orders of the Executive Management Team under the leadership of its Executive Secretary Comrade Jerry Adams.

“As the window period of voluntary tax compliance for individuals and organizations is over, the KADIRS Executive Management Team under the leadership of the Executive Chairman Comrade Jerry Adams has directed for the commencement of enforcement operations on tax defaulters with huge established tax liability across the State. 

“The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service in exercise of its powers vested in it by Section 104 of the Personal Income Tax Act, hereby secured warrant of Authority to levy by distress under Personal Income Tax to distress United Bank of Africa PLC.”

“Therefore, the Bank was sealed up due to huge established tax liability covering 2019 to 2021. Before the enforcement, the Service previously served the Bank with four (4) demand notices for compliance, but no proper response from the bank management”, read some parts of the statement.
