The 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) have called for collaboration between stakeholders in Butura Community in Bokkos LGA and the new leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the area to end ongoing farmers/herders’ clashes in Plateau.
Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division urged the Community to continue collaborating with security agencies to resolve conflicts peacefully.
Maj. Gen. Abubakar made the call when he led stakeholders’ engagement at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos on Wednesday.
He said the meeting was aimed at addressing ongoing conflict between farmers and herders in the state as well as to promote peaceful resolutions.
A statement by Major Aliyu Danja, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations 3 Division Nigerian Army, quoted Abubakar emphasizing the significance of addressing cattle-related conflicts.
He called on the new leadership to promote peace and address issues such as underage grazing and night herding, while advocating the need to be engaging with herders to discourage actions that could lead to violence and property destruction.
In a remark, Dr John Gabriel Makwal, the District Head of Butura, expressed gratitude for the military’s ongoing efforts to restore security in the area, which according to him instilled hope among the displaced people, prompting them to return to their homes.
He however, called for enhanced security in vulnerable villages and proposed the establishment of a military-civil relations committee to foster better cooperation in managing disputes as the harvest season approaches.
Similarly, the newly elected executives of MACBAN, led by Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf, reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Army to achieve lasting peace between farmers and herders.
