Police decry parents’ unwillingness to report rape cases

The Deputy commissioner of Police in charge of investigation in Bauchi state, Ali Audu has decried that some parents are always unwilling to report cases of rape and other sexual violence against their children in the society.

DCP Ali who received members of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria at the Police headquarters in Bauchi assured of the Command’s readiness to cooperate and collaborate with the commission and other stakeholders towards fighting the menace.

“we’ll in that way, take your contact, because in combating this particular crime, during the cause of investigation we have had several challenges where even the complainants are sometimes very unwilling to continue with the case.

He enjoined the human rights commission to use its public relations unit or department to convince and enlighten some of the parents and the victims to come forward pursue to logical conclusion any sexual harassment as it violates their rights.

According to him, the police as an institution saddled with the responsibility of protection of lives property and dignity of the citizens is seriously committed to doing that.

He said, “police is committed to investigate, prosecute and tackle every crime that is related to either against women, children, weak and vulnerable or any citizens that is affected”.

DCP Ali who commended the commission for organising different stakeholders to rally against issues of rape of women and children even at this time of COVID-19 pandemic, assured that their efforts will not go in vain.

He pledeged to relay the message to the commissioner of police, assuring that the CP will take the message with all the seriousness it deserves.

Earlier speaking,Tony Ojukwu Esq, the executive secretary of commission said one of the key Human Rights instruments to which Nigeria is a party to is the proclamation that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Represented by the Bauchi state Coordinator of the Commission, Yahcit Suzan Dala decried that despite the proclamation, the rights of women and girls everywhere still faces greater obstacles to claiming and enjoying their rights than their male counterparts.

“In Nigeria, the outrage and horror on account of rape and other violent crimes against women and girls leading to the death of some of the victims has reached a horrifying and scary proportion in recent times”, the commission said.

Tony said the statistics of women and girls being raped and abused on daily basis comes from all parts and regions of the country.
