Varicocele is an enlargement of the veins of the spermatic cord, in other words, it is an enlarged vein within the scrotum. Because male sperm cells are very fragile, Varicocele generates abnormal temperatures inside the testis which can kill some sperm or reduce their quality, hence, it causes male infertility.
However, it can be surgically corrected, says a medical doctor, Peter Atang, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Telemed Clinic.
Atang, in a Twitter thread, wrote that symptoms of varicoceles may include; a noticeably swollen vein in the scrotum, disturbing feeling of weight in the scrotum, pain in the scrotum which increases on standing and shrinking of the testicles.
However, the disease may occur without symptoms, some people with varicoceles will only experience a dull, aching, or dragging pain in their scrotum which gets unpleasant after doing some exercise, or at the end of the day. This type of varicoceles typically requires no treatment, he said.
But if symptoms ensue, a surgery called varicocelectomy can be performed to restore proper blood flow to the testis and restore fertility, which has a high chance of restoring male fertility.
