Water Scarcity: Borno Gov Burst Water Vendors Diverting Public Water Network for Commercial Gain

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has warned water vendors diverting the state’s public water distribution network for commercial gains to desist from the act or face the full wrath of the law.

Zulum said this action of water vendors is an act of sabotage as which will not be condone, noting that this act is further escalating the perennial water scarcity being experienced in Maiduguri metropolitan city.

WikkiTimes understand that the governor while on a surprise visit to Jere and Maiduguri metropolis on Thursday, uncovered how water vendors constructed specialised dams manipulating the distribution network to trap water pumped for public use to gain commercial benefits.

“It is unfortunate to notice that while the government spend millions to provide water to the people, few individuals have constructed a specialised dams, most with multiple layers of reservoirs. Some of them can store more than one million litres of water”.

“Every day, our treatment plant process and distribute about 40 million litres of water; these criminals trap the larger amount of those supplies for commercial gain”, Zulum said angrily.

The governor said he will not fold his arms and allow some individuals to further the hardship experienced by the people through creating artificial water scarcity, saying “it is unacceptable that some individuals would exploit the suffering of our people for their own selfish gains. We will not tolerate such criminal activities that jeopardize the lives of our citizens.”
