Zamfara Govt. to establish refuse dump

Zamfara State Government says it plans to establish a refuse disposal system in Gusau with modern techniques of collection, treatment and processing of the solid waste.

The Deputy Governor of the State, Mr Mahadi Ali-Gusau disclosed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Friday.

According to Ali-Gusau, the centre will help to improve the environmental sanitation and hygiene of the city.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the poor state of sanitation of the state capital, with refuse being dumped everywhere including roadsides and inside drainage leading to flooding.

He attributed the indiscriminate dumping of refuse by the citizens to the widespread malaria, cholera and other diseases affecting the people in the areas.

“So, the need to establish refuse dump center and embark on constant evacuations has become necessary to restore the hygiene culture of the town.’’

Ali-Gusau said that directive had already been given to the ministry of environment to commence evacuation and fumigation of the refuse dumps in streets and drainage.

“After the general evacuation, refuse dumps will also be placed at strategic points by the regulatory body under the state ministry of environment to ensure constant evacuation.’’

He also cautioned plots owners who allow people to turn their plots into refuses dumps to develop them and avoid being taken over by the state government.

The deputy governor then appealed to the people of the state to cooperate with the government, especially with regards to solid waste management. (NAN)
