ATBU Stabbed Student Died Retrieving Girlfriend’s Stolen Handbag: Police

The fatal stabbing of a final-year Geology student, Joseph Agabaidu, at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) has taken a shocking twist as the Bauchi State Police reveals he was attacked while trying to recover his girlfriend’s stolen handbag.

Agabaidu, hailing from Kogi State, met his tragic end near Yelwan Tudu market in Bauchi.

The assailants, yet unidentified, snatched his girlfriend’s bag, prompting a confrontation that led to a fatal stab wound to Agabaidu’s chest.

The incident sparked outrage among students, resulting in a protest against perceived inadequate campus security. In response, the university hastily shut down, urging students to vacate immediately.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, clarified that Agabaidu’s noble attempt to retrieve the stolen bag cost him his life. The police statement detailed the students’ meeting with the Commissioner of Police, expressing dissatisfaction with the violent protests that followed the incident.

“Some unknown persons, numbers not ascertained, snatched a handbag containing a mobile phone belonging to a lady, one Philomena Ahobee (28), a student of Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic, Bauchi. As a result of which her boyfriend, Agbaidu Joseph, (28) of Anguwan Ngas who is a student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, tried to help her to retrieve the handbag containing the phone. The assailant(s) stabbed him on the left side of his chest with a sharp knife,” Wakil said.

“The victim was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi for treatment but he was certified dead while on admission by a medical doctor.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner, CP Auwal Mohammed, assured swift action, condemning the use of violence in conflict resolution. While acknowledging the students’ concerns, he emphasized the need for professionalism and urged against taking the law into their own hands.

WikkiTimes had earlier reported how ATBU authorities ordered the varsity to be shut down, taking effect from Monday, December 4 to Sunday, December 10, 2023.

All undergraduate students were directed to vacate the premises immediately, with strict compliance to be enforced by the university’s security personnel.
