TSA is a Huge Challenge to University System, MAU VC

The Vice-Chancellor, Modibbo Adama University Yola, Adamawa State, has described Treasury Single Account (TSA), as another huge challenge to the public university system in Nigeria.

According to Professor Abdullahi Liman Tukur, universities by their nature operate several semi-autonomous units and relate with a wide range of local and international organizations and institutions with different protocols.

“Housing all monies coming into the system in a single (CBN) account is a managerial nightmare, making some transactions almost impossible, on the other hand, and making all sorts of monies reading available to the Chief Executive Officer”, the VC added.

While stressing the need for all stakeholders to thoroughly examine the impact of the TSA policy, particularly as it relates to the operations of a university, Professor Liman Tukur said, “With hindsight, decentralisation of universities accountable will provide for better accountability and frugality”.

He called on the federal government to facilitate the perimeter fencing of the University campus, saying with no perimeter fencing of the institution, they are constantly battling to arrest encroachments, intrusions and incursions into their land and campus.

The Vice-Chancellor who was addressing a press conference at the end of his tenure and the 28th convocation ceremonies, says he has achieved a lot during his stewardship including the repositioning of the University’s Centre for Distance Learning, conversion of the University from a forced narrow path to its current conventional broad-based status as well as the establishment of faculty of law, with three departments ready to receive the NUC on resource verification visit to pave way for admissions.

He said, “This year, we are graduating largely, one set of candidates that completed their academic programs in the 2022/2023 academic session with a few from the previous session who couldn’t make it to the last convocation”.
