My constituents are dying of hunger, plateau assembly member cry out, wants lockdown lifted

The member representing Jos North-North constituency in the Plateau state house of assembly, Honourable, Ibrahim Baba Hassan has decried that the lockdown imposed on the state by the government has made life difficult for the people of his constituency.

The lawmaker who stated while contributing to a motion of urgent public importance moved by the majority leader o the house, Hon. Daniel Nanlong during the assembly’s extra ordinary plenary on Tuesday said that the lockdown has two implications on the lives of the people in terms of their health and the economic sectors.

“”My constituents are dying of hunger”, Hon Ibrahim said.

The lawmaker while calling on the state government to allow people go about their normal businesses to keep body and soul together, commended the people of Plateau on the level of their compliance to the lockdown order that lasts for about four weeks

“The lockdown has two implications on the lives of the people, it has implications on both the health and the economic sectors. My constituents are hungry, they are dying”, he said.

“I must commend my constituents for their 100 percent compliance, I must also commend the vigilante group and neighbourhood watch for their efforts, even without been given a dime,” Hon. Hassan added.

The lawmaker who lamented that one of his constituents at Apata ward had died during the lockdown while inside his room, attributed the death to hunger.

Hassan who argued that government alone cannot be able to provide food for the people said, despite government’s efforts, the situation looked as if nothing has been done to the people that are in need during the lockdown.

He called on government to enforce strict security measures at all entry borders to tame further escalation of COVID 19 cases in the state instead of restricting people from carrying out their daily businesses within the state.

“The best thing for us is have total lockdown of our borders and allow the people to come out and do their business,” said.

The member commended government’s efforts in fighting the pandemic, pointed out that the lockdown order has been a serious challenge on the people of the state, saying all commercial and economic activities are made standstill and commercial activities have suffered a set back.

“Observing personal hygiene is the best ways to prevent people from contracting Coronavirus. There is the need for government to procure facemask, hand sanitizers and soaps in large quantity and be distributed free to the people,” he advised.
