No records of COVID-19 yet, Gombe govt says it spent N500m to counter spread, mulls banning inter-state travels

Although there is no records of confirmed case of coronavirus in Gombe State, the Governor, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya has said that the sum of N500 million has been expended by the state government in mitigating the spread of the Coronavirus disease, WikkiTimes can report.

The Governor who stated this while speaking to journalists on Friday at the Government House directed that all public gatherings be suspended till further notice.

Governor Yahaya said “earlier on, before Monday, we have committed 28 Million naira. On my return on Monday when the committee was constituted they estimated and we approved that they spend 296 Million Naira to provide ventilators and other basic needs”.

“We allocated some amounts through the local government councils, about 200 Million naira, So that whatever is needed they will be prepared. So, in all, we have expanded N500m so far”. The Governor further explained.

Speaking more on the restriction order, the Governor maintained that “social gatherings of any form or type be suspended till further notice. Inter-state travels, both public and private will be suspended effective from Sunday, 29th of March 2020 midnight”. He explained.

According to Governor Yahaya, “civil servants on GL-12 are been asked to work from their home for two weeks from Monday 30th of March, 2020. However this does not affect officers on essential services like health workers, fire service, water workers and those working to ensure Power supply to the people.”.

Social outfits affected by the restriction order the Governor said are beer parlours, clubs and other places of socializing, directing the operators to close with immediate effect.

“Effective from Saturday, inter -town, city markets will be stopped, we will ensure each one of them follows the principles of distance relationship. If that becomes impossible, we shall force them to close”. The Governor noted.

He said only those that sell essential commodities like food, medications will be allowed to operate.

While admonishing residents to embrace personal hygiene and social distancing, the Governor assured the people of the state that government is working towards providing more hand washing and sanitation facilities in public places for their own benefit.

He added that religious and traditional leaders have a responsibility to ensure that the measures are complied with.
