The Islamic State in West Africa Province had claimed responsibility for the attack hours later as contained in video footage.

During a visit to the scene of the attack, President Muhammadu Buhari while condemning the intelligence system of the prison, expressed grievances and disappointment over the incident.

“I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it? How did the defenses at the prison fail to prevent the attack? How many inmates were in the facility? How many of them can you account for? How many personnel did you have on duty? How many of them were armed? Were there guards on the watchtower? What did they do? Does the CCTV work?” President Buhari queried.

The advance convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari was attacked in Katsina two days ago while on way to Daura, the hometown of the president, ahead of his visit for Eidel-Kabir festivities.
