ALLEGED BRIBE-TAKING LAWMAKERS (3): Sani Tanko — The Son of Immediate Past Chief Justice of Nigeria

Sani Ibrahim Tanko, 37, is among the lawmakers who made a 37-man committee to investigate the alleged job racketeering by some federal government agencies and institutions.

He is a first-term member of the House of Representatives in the 10th National Assembly, representing the Shira/Giade Federal Constituency of Bauchi State on the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP). A PREMIUM TIMES investigation unearthed that the committee was later involved in bribe-taking from the agencies and institutions earlier accused of wrongdoing.

Sani was born on 11th May 1986 in Bauch State to the family of the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Tanko.

The lawmaker alongside his brother allegedly used public funds and distributed expensive vehicles to parties’ delegates to secure their party tickets in the 2023 primaries. While Sani won the ticket of the PDP to represent the Shira/Giade federal constituency at the lower chamber of the National Assembly, his brother Siraj Ibrahim Tanko emerged as the APC candidate for Bauchi North defeated former serving Senator, Adamu Bulkachuwa.

The duo were also said to have used their father’s position to employ members of their political parties to the Supreme Court, National Judicial Institute, and Judicial Commission.

“What could be the deal that made the Chief Justice of Nigeria have two biological sons win primaries in Bauchi? One for Shira/Giade federal constituency under PDP and the other won the senatorial ticket for Bauchi North under APC,” a resident lamented.

Speaking during the distribution, the chairman of the distribution committee, Alhaji Yayanuwa Zainabari, applauded the lawmaker for his foresight in distributing the spaghetti during this period of hardship.

The lawmaker and his colleagues in the green chamber of the National Assembly were accused of pocketing at least N267 million in bribes through a proxy from the agencies and institutions they were probing.

However, Yusuf Gagdi, a lawmaker representing the Pankshin/Kanam/Kanke federal constituency in Plateau State who happened to be the Chairman of the committee refuted the allegations despite evidence unearthed during the investigation.
