The Bauchi state Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has condemned the gruesome murder of the son of one of its members by suspected kidnappers in the state.
The association while expressing dismay over the dastardly
act in a press statement in Bauchi on Monday said called on the securityagencies to unravel the situation surrounding the heinous crime.“NMA Bauchi received with shock the news of the gruesome murder of the son of our member by criminal elements in Bauchi Metropolis on Saturday, April 11, 2020.” The statement which was jointly signed by Dr Lamaran Makama Dattijo and Dr Abdulmajid Yakubu Ahmad Chairman and Assistant Secretary of the association respectively said.
The statement added that: “At this trying period whenwe are battling the Covid-19 pandemic in the state, it is worrisome that ourmember who is active in the field is forced to bear the distress of kidnap andsubsequent killing of his son”.
“It is worthy to note that the deceased a 15-year oldson our member was forcefully taken from his father’s house in broad daylightand was subsequently murdered despite payment of ransom”, the associationdecried.
It also noted with grave concern that some doctors havereceived messages of threat in recent past.
“It is depressing to note that the community we servehas now become a source of threat to the lives of our members and theirfamilies”, the association lamented.
The statement which commended the security agencies forapprehending the suspected persons charged them to leave no stone unturned tounravel the circumstances surrounding the heinous crime.
“As association we are watching with a keen interest inhow events unfold and expect that justice will be done in this matter”, thestatement said.
The association called on its members to, as sworn under itsHippocratic Oath, continue to render services to the society in this tryingtime.
“If doctors have to worry about threats to their livesand those of their family members, it will greatly hamper our operations. We,therefore, call on the authority to do all within its power to ensure doctorsfeel safe to contribute to the development of the state”. The statementnoted.
The association applauded the courage and sacrifices of itsmembers especially those in the battle frontline against the two deadlydiseases of Lassa fever and Covid-19 despite numerous challenges.
The statement assured that NMA will continue to protect theinterest of its members as they discharge their responsibilities.
