Two Killed, Houses Burned in Fresh Farmer-Herder Conflict in Jigawa 

A fresh conflict has left at least two people killed and three houses burned in a fresh farmer-herder conflict in Birnin Kudu LGA of Jigawa State.

Reports from the area said after a misunderstanding between herders and farmers, some herders invited kinsmen from bandit-ravaged Katsina state and started destroying farmlands in Safa and Gauraki villages.

The farmers reportedly resisted the actions which degenerated into a serious conflict between the herders and the farmers.

Police spokesperson in the State, Lawan Shi’isu Adam, disclosed that five indigenous herders who allegedly invited outsiders to unleash mayhem have been arrested while 15 cows of the visiting herders which they abandoned and have been recovered by the police.

“Today, Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at about 1600hrs, the command received information from reliable sources that, herders with a large number of cattle from Katsina state on the invitation by the indigenous herders were sighted moving towards Safa and Gauraki villages in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area, as a result of this, farmlands along the route were destroyed”. 

“Farmers were also mobilized in large numbers to defend their farmlands before the arrival of a team”. 

“Consequently, the duo attacked themselves, though, the team succeeded in dispersing the warring parties”, explained Adam.

According to him, one person each from farmer’s and herder’s sides lost their lives, 3 houses set ablaze while the invited herders fled with their cows abandoning 15 of them.

He added that normalcy has been restored, as Police tactical teams in collaboration with local  Vigilante, Hunters and Yan Bulala have been deployed to the areas to forestall further breaches of peace.

“An investigation commenced, as anyone found guilty after a discreet investigation will be prosecuted accordingly”, he added.

WikkiTimes had earlier reported that three persons have been injured in a dispute over grazing land in Kalai village near Baranda forest between farmers and herders in Kiyawa LGA of Jigawa State.
